I don't suppose theres any way to join #theway without downloading mIRC?

You can use a java IRC client. Or as a technicality, you could download a different IRC client such as HydraIRC or use Trillian for all your messaging needs. Also Mozilla based Web browsers have Chatzilla built right in for chatting on IRC communication lines.
