BitTorrents anybody?

Postby Roman » Thu Feb 24, 2005 1:19 pm

I’m currently looking for a couple fellas to help me out with a BitTorrent distribution system for The Way episodes. BitTorrents are a sweet way to quickly deliver highly desired content across a peer network (eg: Episode 6).

The tests would require a working BitTorrent client (like Azureus http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Azureus_2.2.0.2_Win32.setup.exe?download ) and a functional Internet connection.

Although former exposure to any BitTorrent client is desirable, it is by no means necessary. With a BitTorrent client like Azureus installed, the test is as easy as clicking on this link (http://www.crestfallen.us/torrents/TheWay-1.torrent)and telling me whether you got the actual executable file.

Comments, successes or complete and utter system meltdown experiences are welcome in this thread (ok… and other stuff too). The first testers will probably have the slowest time of it, but if everyone stays on and “Seeds” the torrent, it should move along pretty quickly.

This does come with a caveat: we may decide to scrap the technology for another alternative, but hopefully that won’t dissuade the truly loyal (or bored).

Thanks for your help.

Ryan you have no idea what you're talking about as usual. Bit torrent would help save bandwidth for Luns site. When Episode 6 comes around, do you think his site can handle the ammount of downloads its going to get? No, I'm fairly sure his server would shut itself down and we'd be forced to wait a month until more space is allocated. Do you even know what Bit Torrent does? Hmmm, no I guess you don't.

Well Dirk I'm sure it will work fine but first we need some seeders.

Are there really enough people for a Bittorrent to be more effective than the normal download? You need quite a few people downloading the file at once to make it work well, don't you?

I'd be happy to test whatever.

I use eMule as a bitorrent and I love it.

Well heres the thing: From what I've read around the net, the more seeds the better, but if you have people finished with their download and they keep the window open, then others can partake in something called "Partial sharing" which is basically the ability to download the same stuff you just downloaded, but faster since there are more sources to copy from. So yes, you would need some downloaders already finished to help. But its not too much of a problem if you have cable or DSL or whatever (whatever keeps you constantly connected), just as long as you leave the window.

Its sort of funny that I just started getting into torrents last night and now this happens. I'll try it out.

I use ABC Torrent, and I'm readily avaliable to seed. I get really good upload rates too (well, at least faster than my downloads... -_-).

Hang on fellas... gonna make some changes. I'm gonna lock this till I'm all done.

Thanks for the help so far!

----------- Update --------------------------------

Alright, currently I'm the only seeder for both torrents I've linked to. Want to be a seeder without going through an arduous first download? It's easy.

Download the torrent from the link I've posted
Visit the Download section of http://www.crestfallen.us and download the corresponding episode of the way (eg: way1.exe)
Use your BitTorrent client to "open a .torrent to seed" <eg: in Azureus, go to File -> open -> .torrent file for seeding>
Point your BitTorrent client to the .torrent you downloaded from the link and the actual executable file and you're officially a seeder.

give it a shot. let me know if you have any luck.

Well, uh, you have to have a torrent file uploaded so that people can actually download the torrent.

Check my initial post... but here it is in case you don't want to scroll up:

http://www.crestfallen.us/torrents/TheWay-1.torrent

If you have trouble connecting to the tracker... make sure the tracker reads:

http://www.crestfallen.us/torrents/announce

This is editable in most bittorrent clients

I could seed E6... Although most people really prefer to get a direct download than use BT. It's faster and easier. And there's really no way to encourage using a torrent if the download is already there.

I agree impossible... although it won't be faster than a direct download, we may offer a "first day" torrent download and add the direct one later on.

The bandwidth saved by making an early download by BitTorrent would be huge (assuming people would install the client and not wait the extra day)

If this seems like a legit solution, we'll probably offer a direct download link and a torrent link for everything... in case the visitor wants to be patient and give a little. heh.

That's probably a good idea - use BT for the first couple of days when there'll be massive strain on the server (and probably until it's up on GW), then put up the DD.

The E1 torrent worked for me perfectly.
