He DID speak up (it was late, but he at least tried), they just didn't show that on TV. Now I just wonder who is going to be the next one, i kinda liked him even if I wasn't catholic (or religious at all)

My history teacher quoted off somewhere that the next pope will probably be of African or Latino heritage because Christianity as a whole is declining steadily in Europe while rising in African and Latino countries.

Edit: If I remember correctly, when the pope dies, the Cardinals gather in Rome, Italy and elects a new pope from one of the Cardinals. Billets are collected and burned. The smoke is black when no pope has been elected, and white when a new pope has been elected from a majority.

Anyway the pope thing's just stuck in my head because he repeats it every single time we talk about the reformation and he bangs his hand on the table with every word.

Okay, now you guys are being ridiculous. You seem to be implying the Cardinals are racist. There is a very high probability they elect a minority pope for the exact reasons mentioned by Lierka. And people also seem to act like the Catholic church is so conservative. It's one of, if not the most liberal of all the Christian churches. Just read the changes in Vatican II. GCM, I can understand if you don't like the Catholic church, but you really just seem to have jumped on the bandwagon of hating it and don't know anything about it.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the most liberal, but it's true that the Catholic church is becoming far less conservative than it once was.

Another Edit: As far as the most liberal, I didn't mean the pope. I said that I wouldn't go as far as to say the RCC was the most liberal Christian church. I agree that he was the most liberal pope up to date.

I'm not implying that the cardinals are rascist. It would just not be in their best interests to elect a minority. Sure, they would get a few more minority followers but think of the repercussions. Although many people will try to prove it wrong, many Catholics (and most other religions too, mind you) have some rascist views. Its not actually an extreme rascism, but more of a mild prejudice. Although they might not think that Blacks or Mexicans are inferior so that they have to use different bathrooms, they might be angry if a minority took their promotion or may think that Blacks and Mexicans are full of criminals, as the media tends to portray, though they would never admit that they own rascist views. Therefore, I believe that some Catholics would be offended and think that a minority pope would be unable to handle his pope affairs.
