The name pop comes from the sound, the name soda comes from chemical composition of the drink. So we had a choice, take the name the mental defects were amused with (pop) or take a sensible name (soda). And since mental defects have no say in existence, soda is the name.

Well actually Strayed, the two words originated by a catch-phrase used by an early cola company. They called it sodapop. Seriously. So yeah, some people went with soda, others went with pop. The country is divided. A few stick with cola. So it's a three-way split.

... it was called Soda Pop because Soda is the name for something with sodium carbonate.

Well, doesn't really matter to me. Soda pops. Therefore pop is fine. Just like my friends shortened Nintendo Gamecube to simply "the cube." That way we didn't have to waste time on precious syllables. I'm an American, and I reserve my right to be lazy as hell!
