i used to have a windows free system... i ran red hat 7.2 (i now run fedora core 3)and was happy.
then i found rpg maker and went dual boot just so i could use it.
that is the only reason i am chained down to the inferior os known as windows.

why do you use windows (if you do)?

Because it would be to much trouble explaing to my mom why we should get rid of windows, and having to explain to her all the differences.

Because...

1) Its easy to use and fix if there is a problem.

2) It came with my computer.

3) Linux? Come on.

4) It was made by our lord and master Bill Gates.

5) Its easy to use and fix if there is a problem.

Edit: Oh and 6) Most programs are made to run on it.

but it is the problem

also, it's my experinece that the only people too stupid to use linux can't use windows either, so don't say it's too hard to use.

well you got me with 6...

ps i don't care for apple either

glad to see support for firefox

if you use public computers often(like i do)
try firefox portable
or portable firefox...
not sure which name they decided on

(Just a heads up, flame war = ban.)

Personally, I've had really angry experiences with Linux in the past. And like, 95% (random guess) of software is designed for/compatible with windows. And I'm pretty much used to it by now. And I'm not buying an apple computer just on principle of the "clear shades of plastic = uniqueness" consciousness they try to perpetuate.

Actually I never used linux in my life so I can't really say much about it. I have only ever used Windows or sometimes the mac. I just like windows better.

I run a Linux laptop (ubuntu :D ), but my desktop is winxp because that's what i'm used to. Once a decent commercial version of MacOSX comes out for x86 processors, I'm gonna dual boot windowsxp and that, using mac for my main computer activities.

i just never got that hardcore into linux

I've only ever used Windows and Macs. Seeing as Macs are better for specific things such as music making rather than versitility my family went for the windows.

A coupla reasons my friend showed me why Linux (Fedora) is better than windows.

XP sucks up more RAM than an asian kid does to a teacher when he's got an 89.9% in a class.

Organization: I backed up my HD on a SATA HD for a bit and transferred the files using linux. The speed was so ...beautiful... (I'm told Linux organizes and transfers better than Windows in terms of speed)

Open Source: Who doesn't love a free program you can alter? ID software supports open source and even made doom 3 open source for linux.

Security: If you don't fucking implement the virus in your computer and choose to run it, you'll be fine. No, really, you'd have to write up the script or something to run it after you "root" it (I believe is the term that was used)

However, there are the not-so-greats

Basic coding knowledge is a must...This filters out at least 60% of the users on computers.

Compatibility issues: Nobody wants to deal with them...

Messing up: Unlike Windows, you can accidentally get rid of the script that starts up your computer as a linux running machine. I speak from experience.

Tech support: I prefer an actual tech support as opposed to a forum if I ask for help.

In short, Linux has plenty of rewards if you know how to use it, however many of us don't have a good grip on coding and don't plan on learning it too soon.

I wish to learn and I shall soon. My sister's boyfriend gets out of Basic training in the army in five days and comes here in one week. He's selling me his desktop, which has Xp and Fedora on it. Plus the fucker never returned my 200GB SATA HD after I lent it to him
:D . Huzzah!

A virus might have destroyed The Way's novelization, along with around 30 or so GB of other stuff on my C drive, a lot of which is irreplacable. So yeah, I hate Windows even more now, I'm glad my good computer isn't physically capable of having these problems because it's actually secure.
