The people deserve to know!
In my Communications 201 class, our last speech for the semester had to be a persuasive speech. I had juggled a few ideas around here and there, and eventually I decided to do something a little different. See, I love satire, and I don't usually get to share it in front of a classroom full of people.
For my persuasive speech, I decided to argue in favor of teaching Pastafarianism in schools, and for the superiority of Pastafarianism in general. Pasta-what? If you don't know what I'm talking about... Read here. And then read here for something a little more sensible
Anyway, here's the speech And here's a quick link to the illustration page: http://www.freewebs.com/downgraderpg/FSM.html
Upon finishing the last sentence, I had a pretty good reaction. Most people were laughing heartily or chuckling while rolling their eyes. Maybe they didn't get it, but I still love entertaining people regardless. Only one other person in the room had heard of the FSM, and I couldn't quite gauge his opinion on the matter. But there was this one girl... hoo boy... I don't think I've ever seen a more irate human being than this girl. She didn't understand it at all, but all she knew is that I had been saying "Christianity" in a condescending voice, and this made her INCREDIBLY angry (Side note: One of my original ideas for a speech was on anti-censorship). She demanded to be told what I was talking about. So I attempted to explain it was satire on the Kansas board of Education case. Her reply: "So you're an atheist and you're making fun of god?" (something to that extent). I could only shake my head and say "No... that wasn't it at all...". So the speeches went on, and this girl continually glared at me for the rest of the time. Ironically enough, that's the kind of thing that vindicates me. Score.
