Although I may be thinking of something else, I believe the Illuminati are some supposed (read: bullshit) secret group which controls everything in the world. The name could come from anywhere (Illuminati = illuminate = light, because they're the light swords).

Well, fwacho says all the proper names in The Way are very carefully chosen, and I doubt this would be an exception. It think the name "Illuminati" was most likely used because of its obvious association with light and also because the name is so closely associated with mystery and secrecy.

Well easily Illuminati means Enlightened Ones in latin. It could also refer to being the bane of the shadow swords. To illuminate to see through the darkness etc. And of course they are a supposed secret organisation which controls the world from behind the scenes. They were also a cult from ancient eygpt which tried to control everything, and I think there were rumors of an illuminati organisation in the midle-ages to do with the christian church, and it was so corrupt back then any way it doesn't really matter. I think they were caught for again, trying to control things... looks like maybe, the way is kept in balance by the illuminati which keeps the shadow swords in order... or something.

I believe the earlierst references to the Illuminati date to the 1400s. Since then, the name has been used by a number of religious secret societies and sects. The rumors of vast conspiracies and ancient underpinnings followed later. See here for more information.

*pulls out Deus Ex*

The Illuminati are said to be a group formed by Alex Weishapt in 1780s to oppose the church's control of modern Europe. They're basically the fathers of the Freemasons, which later migrated to America.

In Conspiracy, we have all that, but the Illuminati had a secret agenda to control the world through suggestion and subtle manipulation. Their goal was to be the "Enlightened one" (Illuminatus), or one with guidance. You get the idea. People beleived that the Freemasons migrated as agents to control the budding United States, and that control continues to this day. The logo of the Illuminati is the pyramid with the all-seeing eye, which is on most US Currency.

Illuminati just refers to "be enlightened" or "guided". Which is what the sword pretty much does.

The association of the Freemasons and other groups with Egyptian mythology and artifacts (i.e pyramids) actually dates only the the eighteenth century. The Masons were essentially a dead organization by that time, because building no longer followed medieval methods, and so the crucial role of stonemasons no longer existed. The Egyptian angle was introduced in a novel of the period (I confess, I can recall neither the author nor title, but I can look them up if anybody is really interested.) about medieval Masonic practices. The novel was popular enough to spawn a whole new Masonic fad, and thousands of men lined up to join the group. The influx of new members totally overwhelmed what remained of authentic Masonic tradition, and the Egyptian-themed Masons were born.

The beliefs of these newfangled Masons were a totally confused mishmash. (Try actually working out the theological cosmology of The Magic Flute, Mozart's Masonic opera, for example.) People took ancient artistic motifs as symbols of fraternity, loyalty, and other Masoinc values. It was probably this association with noble virtues that led to there being a pseudo-Egyptian pyramid on the back of the one dollar bill.

How about this? I'm significantly older than you, and I am a voracious reader.
