I have noticed that a few of the members here are college students. I was just wondering what kind of things people here might be majoring in or planning to major in.

I am a math major, but I am not sure of what I want to do for a career. Some professors and other people are suggesting that I change to computer science or at least minor in computer science. I don't know why people think that I would be good in computer science when I know much less than the average person my age does about computers. I would think that there would be a lot of competition in that area. Does anyone have any comments on this?

I'm told that computer science is a very valuable skill if you are still struggling to secure a job for yourself. Let us simply assume that you get a job as a High School Math teacher. And lets just say you were CRAZY enough to make them do some sort of math-related project on something, perhaps a report. Would it not be usefull to have them simply upload it to the school server where you can retrieve it? Or maybe you could do a power point lesson while you were absent on a work-related meeting. Now those are seemingly basic tasks, but trust me, I know plenty of teachers at my HS that would kill for basic computer knowlidge.

I don't know what year you're in for college, but virtually all majors have the same first 2 year general credits. You know, 4 math credits, 2 history, 3 science or whatever the fuck. Unless you are super genious and somehow got past all the general credits, your first 2 years are almost the same or pretty similar to any other. It's usually after the first 2 years you really start getting into the meat and potatoes of your major, which is where you start getting all A's because it's what your interested in.

I'd say take your time in choosing a major. I'm on a Physical Education route right now to become a teacher and basketball coach. Although once I get my associates degree, I may swing a totally different way to major in Music Engineering. It's all open right now.

As for computer science major. What competition??? Seriously, any knowledge in modern computers or technology is clammered over by ANYBODY. Sure there's gonna be competition for one job at a place, but the job market for advanced computer literacy is giant. It is the future, and I wouldn't forcast that you would have problems finding a job in your desired computer major. It's just finding a job that you really enjoy is the hard part.

I am currently a freshman.

I am fairly far ahead of my major track for the math courses, but you are right, a lot of my classes are crap that everyone has to take.

It's usually after the first 2 years you really start getting into the meat and potatoes of your major, which is where you start getting all A's because it's what your interested in.

I have heard this a lot. People think I am wasting my time trying to get A's in all of my classes right now. I understand why people don't want put a lot of effort into classes they are not interested in. The stupid composition classes take up way more time than all of the classes in my major combined. I just want to keep my GPA as high as possible.
