Jack Vance wrote a lot of stuff; his speciality is far-out cultures. Sometimes this works, as in his Tschai: Planet of Adventure novels (City of the Chasch, Servants of the Wahnk, The Dirdir, and The Pnume), in which he provides good reasons for most of the cultures to exist. Other times, he makes the societies too alien to be at all believable (as in The Languages of Pao).
Among his best works are his Dying Earth novels, Demon Princes novels, Tschai novels, and Alastor novels. All but the Planet of Adventure ones mentioned above are available in omnibus editions. The first Alastor novel is a bit weak, but the later two are much better; however, if you skip the first, you'll likely miss the most important point in the third. (Actually, it's easy to miss this crucial point even if you've read them all, so be warned.)
