This is actually how I saw the scene, as more metaphor than flashback. (I posted that before, but I doubt that it was me you read.) It made sense, though. Dirk said that the water would make them see the truth, or what was really there, or something. So what they saw was metaphorical; them fighting over whatever that thing was represented the same way they were fighting over Rhue: "It's mine!" "No, it's mine!" And I suppose the "it" is relevant, too, because they weren't fighting for Rhue, they were fighting against each other.
The map was called Flashback, though, and it DOES seem that way. >_<
