Midian can control wolves?

Maybe, if you think about it, this could a little bit of sence. Perhaps he and Gaius went to Landorin, and Midian controlled the wolves that were seen in the flashback. And he does contain some similarity to wolves in the first place.
I dunno, just a theory.

the 'wolves' were probably people under some sort of spell to make them appear as wolves to the kids and what not

From when I finished episode 5, (and probably earilier) I chose to think everything in the flashback that is a black, shadowy sprite as a gap in Rhue's memory. So they didn't necessarily even look like wolves.

Ah hah! But in Rhue's memory he heard howls. Wolf howls... Which means there were at least wolves in the general area. Too bad Rhue offed Lyrra, what with her being one of the survivors of the Landorin massacre.
