Is there any way to get round the plunge with Kygar in Chapter 5, just after you see Kloe run away from those blue scarves? I suck at plunges

No, not aside from editing the game with RM2K or F9. You have to fight and win.

If you had trouble with Kygar, you're gonna have bigger trouble later. Find summore notch items, there's a whole slew of them in E6.
