O.K., heres my theory, and it's a pretty good one considering the fact I'm a newb at all.
O.k., here it is: Many people assumed that the shadow man (or "demon") fought in the pits could be Tranziun because they have similar hair (HA!) and they said stuff like it got messed up or it "changed" or something like that.
But do you know who's hair is VERY similar to the shadow man's hair fought in the pits?

I know it doesn't quite fit, but if you think about it their hair really does look alike, and in one of the character sets in the way, it has a set of dirk wearing a lab coat which suggests he may have a link to that Jopanga (hope I spelled it right or i'll look like a real newb).
I dunno, maybe the demon fought in the pits could be Traz... but I doubt that a lot... I know it is even less likely to be dirk, but their hair does look very similar... and when exactly did Rhue meet Dirk? Somewhere in ep 4,
where he just casually met Dirk AND (uh-oh forgot her name) uhhh...
Masked Lady (Scatha... or Chasta whatever the hell u wanna call her) seems to know him and she was clearly angry at Rhue when he defeated the shadow man in the pits, maybe for other than obvious reasons!
Anyways i hope u consider my theory to be good as if I haven'y pulled it off well then I'll look like a real newb, tell me what you think about it!

The set with Dirk wearing a lab coat is the original character set. Dirk's character set is an edited version of that character set.

... and when exactly did Rhue meet Dirk? Somewhere in ep 4,

Rhue first met Dirk in the mines in episode four.

I'm open to the possibility, as Scatha does seem to know Dirk quite well.

And we're all almost sure that Dirk is more than just a feeble old man put in for comic relief.

It was Dippy.
He can even change himself in to a human form.

Anyways, some people say it could be that midian guy but I'm not really sure about that.
And I kind of have this crazy theory right now that Dirk could be related to Midian or Traziun maybe, heh, I even think that Dirk could have killed Traziun's mother, of this I have no proof, but they have not met yet and it would be a pretty big suprise.

Dirk? Kill Traziun's mother? If he did, boy he sure is going to get holy hell from Traz.

I don't think Dirk and Traziun have ever come in contact with each other in the game, so he might have some sort of connection.

sounds good. and scatha recognized dirk in episode 5, right? and dirk recognized scatha. i could imagine that your theory is right... maybe ^^
