Plunge online idea

Hey, after Lun is completely done making The Way, wouldn't it be sweet if he or somebody else made an online plunge game? It'd be like this...

You create a character and give them starting stats with some sort of point system, then pick out a sprite. Then you can battle computers to gain levels and stuff like that. And then, (this is the exciting part) you can battle other online players! And then it could get complex, like betting money or something that you can use to buy upgrades for your character. Like maybe there could be different armors and swords. Then how strong you are would be compared with other players, and it would give you ranks, like from Wanderer to Pharaphalyn. It would have all of the basic Plunge rules with some added features.

If you like that idea, post some of your own! Not saying that anyone would even make this game, but still. :D

Figure this has to be said... but I'm pretty sure this has been brought up two or three times.

It would be really cool if someone did make this, but it would have to be made using something other then RPGM2K. Maby Visual Basic?

As it is I could probably make a VB client that would have three buttons and a text box. You would click the button, your partner would click the other and the data would be switched all about. But other than that, I'm too lazy to put in all the extra computations for blade arts and such.

If you provide me with the networking code I can manage the rest and I DO have time and effort to spare to integrate as many special features as you'd like :)

Wow! That'd be so sweet! Unfortunately i don't have the networking code and have no idea how to obtain it. Like, I'll email Lun about it i suppose, but what do i ask for? The Plunge networking code? Also, we'd need to ask his permission and all that. Tell me what we'd need and I'll talk to Lun about it.

Hey Lun! If you read this, it's me, Jon. Go ahead and email me if you happen to read this stuff.

Kyle, pm me and tell me what we'll need.

of course the idea continues to be brought up, but I'm not too optimistic about it being followed through upon.

That would suck. There's no metaphors about sex. Or is there?

Ah the good ol' Online Plunge idea...
I always thought it would be cool just to have an MMORPG world of 'The Way' ... not just a plunge system... but everything the game features into your own storyline and such.

tis only a dream though :(

I was actually talking to OverlordBill about the networking code. He can seemingly write it, but doesn't feel like investing a lot of time in it. I on the other hand can do a lot of stuff in VB but not networking code.

When was I talking to you? Oh!!! Where I posted that? But your statement was still deceptive.

Bah, it's on the second page, and dead for a long while.

I'm attempting to make it in Java, mostly as my first "game" in that language and learning along with it. The program (not applet probably, too much security restrictions) will use TCP to connect to another player in a peer-to-peer connection.

Of course, the most difficult of all (that I've encountered so far) is the graphics and the fact that not all the blade arts are revealed yet (so my base BladeArt.java class might need to be rewritten later on), and the fact that I have three more 700+ pages books still to read over. And then there's my summer job, which is basically taking my whole time, leaving little for programming fun.

BTW, here's a few questions: should the interface be EXACTLY (in every detail) like the plunge system in the Way? How about settings, and music? Should the user be able to have their own battlegrounds and make their own sprites? And stuff like that....

As for a MMORPG of the Way, there's a lot of problem associated with that. Mainly, who's going to run the server, who's going to pay for it running, and actually writing a secure program for the server. Then add lots of time for development, and a continual group of staff constantly adding to the MMORPG. I really don't see that happening any time soon...unless Lun attracts the attention of some big company and they decide to market a MMORPG based on the Way.
