What if....

Postby Inderos » Tue Sep 21, 2004 12:06 am

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I was wondering what the general opinion on this board would be, if a professional publishing company bought The Way from Lun, but didn't change it. Like a port from Computer to Console. Would you guys be happy that more people would learn about The Way, or do you feel special because you're one of the select few? XD

This would only work if you also had a time machine to take you back to 1992. I can't envision The Way, as is, running on a current-generation console.

I guess it doesn't count as a console really... But what about Game Boy Advance? And also, look at Disgaea. The graphics weren't that great... But look how great the game was.

Still, Disgaea had better graphics than the Way and the effects were full 16-bit color. Gameboy advance would work, unless The Way is too processor intensive for the GBA (which really can't handle much).

I would however like more and more people to play The Way, but it's not easy convincing people to spend a reasonable amount of time on a game from the 16-bit console era which they have no guarantees will actually be good.

The Way would be great on the GBA or DS... It'll never happen, though.

That would really be the only alternative that would make any sense. The only way it cuold happen, though, was if somebody from a real company that makes electronic RPGs fell in love with The Way, because making The Way wouldn't be that much less work than creating a new game from scratch. Lun's original version would provide the story and many of the graphics concepts, but everything else would have to be redone.

yeah... it would be ahell of a lot of work. maybe if there was a man working on every episode... er make that a man on every tenth map, then it would go somewhere.

You would run into problems with stylistic consistency this way, particularly with differnt folks preparing the graphics.

As it is, The Way already suffers from this (to a very limited extent). Sometimes the transition from Lun's custom backgrounds to standard ones with RPG Maker objects can be a bit jarring.

He should get someone to make loads of 3D backgrounds of different settings to replace the rtp-ish ones. If i knew how to do it I could try to 'fix' Lide or some other really basic stuff.

Nah. For some parts of the game, there has to be the RTP-ish backgrounds. The Way has most, if not all, of the major cutscenes on those 3-D backgrounds, and that's good enough. Those backgrounds would get extremely annoying if I saw them in every map.

Buildings are notoriously hard to render in Bryce. It CAN be done, like the blood lyn super mountain fortress in E5 (which is probably one of the best things I've seen rendered in Bryce), but this is on a very large scale. In this case, 3D just can't get as detailed as pixels can.

What about handdrawn maps then?

Like in Sunset over Imdahl? Those can be detailed, but it's the same reason Lun didn't do as many 3D backdrops in E2: Lack of interactivity. 3D and handrawn maps look pretty, but oftentimes the characters seem out of place, and objects look awkard, compared to this surreal, antialiased background. The Way has done a remarkable job of avoiding this, but things such as Marna, with complicated cliff systems, and tree mazes, would be much too difficult to create in Bryce, or be hand drawn.
