Some thoughts on Gaius
First off, I must apologize for not looking as thoroughly through the old posts as perhaps I should before posting this. I know it's nothing like justification, but, as this is my third post, I am something of a noob at present. Anyway...
My theory is basically this: Gaius was playing both sides of the Guided 'civil war' to slow them down, getting into Tetzel's inner circle and, possibly, killing him afterwards, enabling him to reach the End of the Way for the Blana Sera, or himself, before anybody else to become the Purpose.
It's entirely possible that everybody thinks I'm now out of my mind, but bear with me.
First of all, Gaius's playing both sides of the Guided 'civil war'. This might seem moronic because it's clear that Gaius is chatting with Velicia about the rebellion in Estrana during Episode IV. However, one thing that I haven't seen mentioned on these boards is a certain line by one of Sacrifa's followers when the three are camping, late in Episode V: "The man from Xor should be meeting with them [main rebel force] soon," in response to Sacrifa's question of who will be leading the main force. Other than Rhue's introduction during the tournament (which was probably just the announcement of a random stretch he had heard of), Gaius is the only person to introduce himself as '_____ of Xor,' so they could have been speaking of him. Of course, it would be horribly naive to assume that Gaius is the only major person from Xor associated with the Guided; this could easily be a red herring, but Gaius is simply the only character we know that fits the bill. So, if that information is accepted, it makes sense that Gaius is either betraying one side or fighting on both.
Next, that bit about becoming the Purpose. It's simple to explain and it's probably been mentioned before, but in the Wanderer's Guide Book something is mentioned about the first person who reaches the End of the Way becoming the new Purpose. It wouldn't be too illogical to presume that Gaius is attempting to achieve this goal, and it would also explain why he left Rhue behind when on his way to the End. Of course, that still doesn't explain where Dirk or Scatha were when Rhue woke up...
Anyway, onto that part of the theory about the Blana Sera. I think they were involved because of the scene that Gaius beheld when Kloe hugged him. The Blana Sera might have shown him what Kloe had done to Ballar, which also showed their reason for wanting Kloe dead, to keep him on track. However, now that I think about it, it occurs to me that Gaius may have simply gotten his 'visions' ability from them and that it activated automatically when she touched him. Those abilities were likely given to Gaius when he (he was probably the escapee other than Traziun) left Delhara in the Blood Lyn's (or at least in Kalmar's) good graces, as opposed to Traziun who was unwilling to accomplish the task that was given to him by his father. It's possible that Gaius is still in line with them, despite working with the Guided, who, as the scene outside Matalan proves (Episode III), oppose the Blood Lyn quite strongly. In fact, it only supports the 'Gaius is fighting on both sides of the Guided revolution' theory. The Guided would probably be the Blood Lyn's main opposition for reaching the End of the Way first, so Gaius was sent to exacerbate the revolution to keep them occupied, so the Blood Lyn, via Gaius, could reach it first.
This would also make it seem only natural that Gaius kill Tetzel. After all, Gaius does seem a tad manipulative, so it doesn't seem too far-fetched that, if reaching the End of the Way first is his goal, he would work his way into Tetzel's inner circle and kill the man when he least expected it.
How Gaius knows that Rhue killed Lyrra has two possible explanations, in my eyes: 1) he took Tetzel's book and the book told him that Lyrra was dead (it either also said how she died or Gaius just assumed that, since her name had just appeared...) or 2) Gaius's/the Blana Sera's 'visions' ability extends beyond seeing Blood Lyn's backgrounds. The second one might also tie in with DSOK's theory of several months ago that Gaius may be the 'quill' for Tetzel's book of the dead (which might give Tetzel even more reason for letting Gaius get close to him).
And... Well, that's my theory at present. Sorry if that was a tad unorganized, but I hope it got my basic points across.
