I'd have to agree with Excell on this... 9 was much better than 8 and 10.
Characters:
8, 10:
They were much easier to hate, Squall was by far the worst character to ever be placed in a Final Fantasy game and his rival was no better. Tidus was a little more interesting than Squall but he was still a joke, who in hell wants an athlete as a main character? The female leads in 8 and 10 were just as annoying, though Garnet was not all that great. The only decent character out of 8 and 10 was Auron, he carried alcohol and big sword.
9:
Vivi was awesome, fun little mage guy.
Zidane was a perverted thief, always fun.
Freya was a giant rat... (If you don't mind me borrowing a line and probably using it incorrectly) OMGWTFBBQ!!1!1!
Steiner was old, stupid and a heavy hitter, a sorta classic.
That chef guy was probably not the best choice of characters to put in a game, but hell... 7 had Cait Sith.
Setting:
8:
There was way too much technology and magic for it to make a decent background for the storyline. Gunblades were idiotic as you both agreed.
9:
Return to the classic kingdom style setting, can't really be beaten.
10:
Less technology but still felt too futuristic.
Storyline:
8:
There was a storyline? Haven't met many people who would deny it was the worst storyline to ever be produced. Space travel, ghostly possessions, summons, flying school buildings... just doesn't mix.
9:
The story was interesting and pulled you along for the first half, later on it felt a little cliché.
10:
Collect the summons! How fun! not really though... The beginning could be enjoyable but once you realize you are going to skip through a bunch of towns collecting summons and solving fuckingly-retarded puzzles while discovering secrets about a nonsense religious practice, you feel like burning in hell for the rest of eternity.
Systems (leveling, weapons, battle, magic):
8:
Draw was a failure and the weapon system wasn't all that great either. Completing tests for a higher wage was too much of a joke.
9:
Basic leveling, weapons and battle. Learning magic was a bit like 7, which did add an incentive for building up often.
10:
Leveling system was a failure just like Draw. From what I could remember about procuring weapons, it was basic shit... with a side of fuck-me-in-the-ass (Remember, that is a very bad thing). I did enjoy the switching of party members during battle but it probably wasn't the best idea. The monsters were all a weak to a certain characters attack type, which really made it annoying as hell. If you got too tired to switch to the right character, you just kept pressing X (or O, whatever it was) and took half an hour to beat a large slime with a sword or ball.
