He was not the god of corn! He was the son of Uranus and Gaea and the father of the gods.

He was indeed a god of corn. The division of the gods into Olympians and Titans was a relatively late development in Greek mythology, as writers, scholars, and theologians of the classical period tried to reconcile the comflicting beliefs of Greeks from all around the Agean. In some versions of the Greek myths, Kronos was supposed to have presided over an Edenic period, characterized by prosperity and bountiful harvets, known as the Golden Age of Man. Kronos' totem--the sickle--symbolized both his mastery of the wheat fields and his castration of Uranus. (In fact, the appearance of a sickle in the story of Kronos and Uranus was probably a direct consequence of Kronos' prior associations with the tool, in his aspect as a agricultural deity. However, I do not believe that this has ever been definitively verified, since early Greek religious texts are rare.) The association the of Roman god Saturn with Kronos actually derives entirely from the fact that Saturn was originally a corn god as well.

I've read that Kronos, as Saturn, was known for the golden age in Italy, but I still haven't found anything about corn.

Nevermind, I just read up a little more... apparently the Italians compared Kronos to Saturn, who was an ancient corn-god. Haven't seen anything about Greeks considering Kronos as the god of corn, only the Italians showing Saturn as the god of corn.

A google search for "Kronos corn" yields several relevant links.

And any search for Kronos Corn seems to wind up with references to Saturn as the god of corn and relating Kronos to Saturn.

"Saturn governs restriction, discipline, form, and structure. Where Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts. Saturn can make life very difficult at times. Saturn is a Roman god of corn, and he is associated also with his Greek counterpart, Kronos." (http://www.siriusthoth.com/astrology/saturn.htm)

"The Roman gods are often corrupted or different versions of their Greek counterparts. The Romans compared the Greek Kronos with their corn-god, Saturn, although a monthly festival to celebrate the harvest was held in Athens in honor of Kronos." (http://www.myastrologybook.com/Saturn-K ... gy-god.htm)

"The Romans compared Cronus with their Saturn, who was to the Romans a corn god. This is from the association of the "Golden Age". In Athens on the 12th day of the month Hekatombaion a festival was held in honour of Cronus, which was known as the "Kronia". It was a celebration of the harvest. "

Closest thing that Kronus/Kronos/Cronos/Cronus was associated to was the harvest, on the other hand Saturn was associated with specifically corn.

Did you see that great picture of Kronos devouring his young?

The key statement is this one: "... although a monthly festival to celebrate the harvest was held in Athens in honor of Kronos." This festival predated the Roman occupation of Greece. By Roman times, Kronos was not widely thought of as a god of corn by the Greeks, but enough of a kernel (sorry) remained of his original character that he was still recognized in some places as a harvest deity.

Corn is a pretty nonspecific term; it means the same thing as "grain." What American's think of as corn--maize--is a plant native strictly to the New World, for which the name "corn" was adopted, because it was the only useful grain in the Americas when Europeans first arrived.

I've always loved this picture.

Also, Saturn , if I'm not mistaken, literally means 'reaper' or 'harvester'.

I just watched the episode of Stargate where Kronos eats it. That reminds me, it's time to change my avatar.
