Nope. It's called gravy by hardcore Italian people. Sometimes tomato gravy. We do use it on meats but we call it gravy on pasta too.

Now you're just setting rules up according to your own family, that just doesn't work. There has to be some sort of sauce from a meat in it in order for it to be considered gravy.

Actually, as far as dictionary.com is concerned hoagies, submarines, poor boys, etc are the same thing.

It's not according to my family. You're the first Italian person I've met who doesn't call it gravy.

Yeah, I know it considers them the same thing. They're all considered meat sandwiches. As I said before, I really don't care about this stuff at all. I'm just having some fun with it.

tomato sauce... and you're the first italian person I've ever seen call it gravy, though I don't have conversations about sauces with many people.

Thank you Porter. 8)

Non-Italians or uncultured heathens call it "tomato sauce".

So you're saying that because gravy is used for another word it can't be used for "tomato sauce"?

gravy is a classification of sauces, you can't call something just gravy anyway. The general meaning of the word gravy is turkey gravy, because we use that on thanksgiving.

You can call something whatever you want. If we differentiate it becomes tomato gravy and brown gravy.

it doesn't fit the classification if it doesn't have meat sauce in it, so straight tomato sauce wouldn't be tomato gravy. If you were to cook meat in the sauce, like most people do, it could be called tomato gravy.

Yeah. But if you look at all "tomato gravy" it always has meat in it. "Tomato sauce" is essentially the same thing as tomato soup.
