Hey help a brother out

Postby Iteroth » Sat Dec 11, 2004 3:21 pm

My friends have been telling me that I should get a guitar, but I don't know anything about the subject.

Any players here have any suggestions for beginners in the low cost area?

Get a Squire made by Fender. Those are very affordable, and considered "beginner" guitars.

Squire Affinity Strats are always good places to start, they are solid little guitars, you can find them at around $199 - $250. Standard Fender Stratocasters are a step up in prifce and quality, but still around $399

Ibanez makes some excellent beginner electric guitars.

if you're into the acoustic Bob Dylan or Gordon Lightfoot thing, Fender Acoustics come pretty nicely priced as well as Ibanez.

Stick to Squire or Ibanez for your beginner guitar needs at low prices. Stay away from Peavey's beginner guitars though, they are not a good bet.

Okay. Thanks for the information everyone. I'll keep my eyes open around town in pawnshops and classified ads and whatnot.

Get one from one of those nonprofit organizations. They cost like 50 bucks. And violins cost 100.

Best place to buy your insturment. I got my Musicman String Ray for around $1400. List price is almost $2000. Don't go through personals or pawn shops. You want your first insturment to be low in price(So if you don't like it, you're not out too much money), yet you want it to sound nice as well(So that you think you're good and keep playing.) It's amazing how much spending that extra $100-$150 will do to the quality of what you buy. You should expect to spend around $250-$350. You also have to remember that EVERY insturment is different, even if it is the same model as another.

I would also suggest you buy a starter set. They usually give good deals if you buy the guitar, amp, cables, tuner and extra strings all in one set. Something like this might be a good idea:

Anyways, those are my suggestions. Good luck :).

Ahh. Pawn shops are out. Okay, I can dig it. Just so used to picking up neat stuff for cheap. :P

Actually, the link Inderos gave pretty much sums up the sort of thing people have been saying. Well, I'll do some research on the internet while I save up some money for a while, then maybe in a month or two I'll make a decision.

Edit: Reading porter's post... Or maybe not... No starter pack, hmm? Well, you guys know more than me I guess, but now there's conflict. Oh well, I'll research if I can, and see what I learn.

Thanks for everyone's help

those starter sets are always thrown together terribly. The cables blow, the amp usually is defective 2 months out of the box.

so? William Hung's first album was rated high, and it sucked. Package deals are bad investments.

I've never heard of people having problems with them. Anyways, Iteroth, it's your choice. All of Musican's friend's products have a 3 month return policy if you don't like it. And I'm pretty sure you get a 1 year warranty if it breaks through normal usage. Crate replaced my 100W after I blew the speaker. Didn't charge a thing. So, the amp getting messed up shouldn't be a concern.
