It's Music Time!

Postby Teenr0cker » Thu Jan 27, 2005 9:21 am

Just wanted to ask: Does anyone else other than myself have an interest in musical theory and stuff? I've just finished downloading a very well rated midi writer and player so I might need someone to review it...someone with proper theory skillz (yo!). I might get a program that recognises sound and puts it as a midi, but I'll save that for later.

As a piano player I've done some basic Music Theory, though nothing in the means of advanced stuff.

Music Theory is a trap class. Only take it if you really REALLY need to.
<WarV> You know what this place needs?

If you have any questions ask me.

But anyway, do you think the greatest musicians ever took a music theory class?

Innovate your own music, fuck the books.

Lol, nobody else has a school retarded as yours Bill. And by that I mean nobody would offer such a class.

Myself? I learned musical theory the painful way. Joe Neyland, my personal god and idol, taught it to me last year since I was in his section. He'd put stuff on a chalk board, erase it, and ask questions while keeping score. Whoever had the highest score wasnt hit... everyone else was "swacked", which was basically what we called the Halo melee attack, with about 7-9 chalk-riddled heavy sweatshirts (his eraser). He literally beat the information into us. If we failed to apply it to when we played triads as a section, a swift kick in the nuts sufficed to show his anger. We called him the band nazi. But his intentions were clear...i guess...>_>

My Visual Basic teacher always smacks us in the back of the head when she ctches us talking, or if she's far away she'll through somthing at us. She also has those round mirrors in the corners of the room so she can see everyone at all times.

You've got quite a bunch of fearsome teachers X_X (they're already there, none can stop 'em :evil: ).
Never heard of such ones in my lost and grassy country. Guess that's the shamanic vibe, or something ^^

Joe was a senior. As in a student. As in I couldve done something to stop him, but he scared me to the point where he made a kid cry in fear.

I took music theory in college... pretty useful stuff actually. I you want to to write your own music I suggest you use "cakewalk". It should cost around $50 and is teh same thign Lun uses. It's prett easy to use. I've written 3 songs on it.

Okay, music is sorta my meat and drink, so I can't help but reply to this, even though I've been silent on here for a very long time.

When I was doing music stuff in college, I was taking some composition classes, and some independent studies and such. My instructor pretty much said, Composition doesn't follow theory, it breaks the rules. But theory is important because you need to know which rules you're breaking, and why.

For simple midi writing, I would recommend cakewalk, especially if you're using a midi compatible keyboard. It's relatively cheap, and I have homestudio 9 myself.

If you're more focused in writing scores and written music (i.e. intending to print it out for live performances) I would say try finale, although it can be a little unfriendly at times, and it's pricey -.- I'm using Finale 2k1, but I got it from a friend *cough*

If you're into mp3 type stuffs, well, I can't really help you there. I have some decent soundfonts, and I play around with Fruity Loops quite a bit, but I don't think I'd call my mp3 versions "professional" sounding.

<Warning: shameless plug ahead>
It's been awhile since i've written anything significant, and i'm not saying i have gobs of time to work on music, but if anyone here needs a composer, I wouldn't mind trying to get back into writing stuff. A little game music might get me back in the swing of things ^_^ Just realize I tend to be slow at writing stuff. :P I'm supposed to help a friend of mine out with some relatively simple music sometime in March. Apparently he's going to need a composer for his student projects at Full Sail.

I'll try to put together a portfolio of sorts later.
<end plug>
