Aphorisms and Haiku

Postby Teenr0cker » Tue Feb 01, 2005 5:48 pm

An Aphorism is a brief saying embodying a moral, a concise statement of a principle or precept given in pointed words. These are little words of wisdom that better ones personal life in some aspect. Below are some examples:

Poor Richards Almanac, by Ben Franklin

A penny saved is a penny earned.

More men have been made slaves by their wealth, than have been freed by it.

One I found on a sig and have used occasionally:
Trust those who seek the truth, not those who claim to have found it

I would like, just out of leisure, for you to try making one yourself. Some can be ripoffs of actual ones, but as long as its not official (and I dont mean changing a word or two) and it makes a good point, it should be fine. This is just for fun: I reiterate this as to strongly reccommend that you at least post one of your own if you are also going to say something else. If you wish to post an aphorism that is insulting to another, as long as it qualifies as an aphorism, it will be fine.

And if you want to do something else to insult one another, you may do so via Haiku. We all should know Haiku by now. 3 lines, first and third are 5 syllables and the middle is 7. There are variations, but as long as it hits 17 syllables, its all good.

It is at this time I implore Jeramyu and Porter to remove any non-haiku or non-aphorism posts that may be posted. I give you my full support to lock this forum if you see it goes too far off-topic. And if anyone does go off topic, you shalt be deemed "queer that talks too much and nobody likes" and if you have no concern with any of this "poetic crap" then simply ignore this topic like so many others. If nobody finds any interest in this at all, then let me apoligize in advance.

Not the best one ever, but still a pretty good one:

One can not lead if one does not know what to lead or if they can lead.

I know tons of them I just can't think of them right now. I will post more later.

I found this in the Wheel of Time series, said frequently by the Aiel, and I really liked it:

Life is but a dream, and all dreams must end.

My English teacher gave us a haiku assignment on Friday, we each had to write five. I'll post some of mine, even though they're more serious then the ones Teen is posting.

The sea rolled- salt choked,
And clouds swallowed my pale sky,
The rain- when I die.

Ubiquitous He,
It can only be a dream,
Run blind- little sheep.

The absinthe leaves,
Mixed color of silver and green,
I see you, in me.

I know haiku don't have to rhyme, but mine have a tendency to anyway.
I'll say I found her floating face down and I won't let them hurt you, I swear, from the crystal to the crucifix, I will always be with you. So if I go to hell for this I guess I'll meet you there.

You dishonored me,
So I ask you, when you speak,
Does anyone care?

Early to bed and early to rise means you fail the test you should've crammed for the night before.

Oh man, I love the question, "Did you stop beating your wife?" I mean, if you say yes, then it means you beat her before, and if you say no... You still do. :)
