Gaius Marius - the one and only corrupt leader -

Postby Alundra » Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:52 am

Read what's underneath here....
"Gaius Marius, …a man of rustic birth, rough and uncouth, and austere in his life, as excellent a general as he was an evil influence in time of peace, a man of unbounded ambition, insatiable, without self-control, and always an element of unrest. "

Velleius Paterculus History of Rome, II, xi.

There's more about this individual underneath if you want the full story on him. I'm betting that Lun based his character on this historic figure.
Seeing as he influenced Julius Caesar, we might see Rhue as Julius, being led by the devious Gaius. Seeing as I stated a long time ago that the 'campfire story' stated that Rhue was some chosen one, rhue might become an important leader figure...?
Meh... just another theory likely to be drilled deeply into the lower way...
Impossible be my guest !

GAIUS MARIUS, 157-86 BC
The life of Julius Caesar was deeply influenced by one of Rome's most famous generals and politicians - and Caesar's uncle by marriage - Gaius Marius. When Caesar was an impressionable child, the remarkable Marius had been Consul of Rome six times; he was the most famous and brilliantly successful of the Republic's generals; he was called the "third Founder of Rome" after saving Italy from the combined allied armies of the Cimbri and Teutones in 102-101 BC. The impact of Marius upon the young Caesar will always be debated but his impact upon the history of Rome is far clearer. Without Marius' ambition, his military successes, his far-reaching reforms to the Army, and finally his willingness to embrace any kind of factional turmoil to achieve his political ends, it is unlikely that Caesar's subsequent career would have existed.

Over the centuries, Marius' glorious contributions to Roman arms were less remembered than the decline and violence which attended his last years; thus a workday historian like Velleius Paterculus could write, over a century later.

Well it's possible when Lun was searching for character names he looked into ancient history and mythology to try and find a name suiting the character he needed.

When I saw Gaius' name, I thought he bore similarity to Gaius Gracchus, a Roman Senator who spoke out against the Republic's corruption and eventually...um...killed himself >_>

Gaius is to mysterious of a character right now to see many connections, but after EP6, hopefully we will know more about his motivations.

heh and we all know that christianity is what Lun used most in his epic tale...
But I got to asking this because of this
as he was an evil influence in time of peace, a man of unbounded ambition, insatiable, without self-control, and always an element of unrest.

If that doesn't strike your bell then I don't know what would... It fits Gauis like a glove if u ask me...

First of all, I would really not call Gaius evil. Wasn't there a discussion on evil some time back? And, to repeat what has been said before, Gaius hasn't been seen killing at all except his mention of "the man he and Rhue killed".

Second, it really wasn't a time of peace. Before what we can infer as the first killings of the PS, the blue scarves were already about (the opening scene in E1 with the girl warning Rhue)

Plus, Gaius seems to have some good amount of self-control. So, it really doesn't fit Gaius unless he is the PS or something like that.

fwacho said that Gaius is either very good or very evil. Personally I think it could be either, but I think I'm leaning towards the evil side.

Maby he'll seem very good to some people, but very evil to others. It all depends on the persons own motives.
