I won the spelling bee in 3rd grade. I spelt Hanukkuh somehow....
(sp?)

Since then I still don't know how to spell it correctly

With the stupidity of some (especially American) people, I wouldn't be surprised if you could win a spelling be with the incorrect spelling of Chanuka...

You konow, I would agree that many americans are ignorant, there are some very intelligent Americans. I'm glad that I go to a rather prestigious school, but don't generalize so strictly, while I would like to see the US adopt the Australian schooling system, I'm sure there are stupid Australians

You have no idea... *sigh* Enough to make me sick at times. It's still worse in the US, though. At least in terms of general ignorance: It's just that the media would rather report on celebrity antics than anything outside of the US (seriously, try comparing CNN there with CNN here/in Asia, it's amazing), and schools are happy to teach as little about other religions or countries as they can.

My point, though, was more that even the people running the spelling bee would get it wrong.

On a side note, we also have measurement and electoral systems that actually MAKE SENSE (oh, come on, you know it's true).

Elementary school children are still being taught about the Brontosaurus. There's no such thing as a Brontosaurus. I remember being told by my sixth grade teacher that Democrats want to take ALL the money in the country and give it to the poor. Just turning on the tv for ten minutes forces you to learn that some women don't get to the bathroom on time, constipation is a problem that can be fixed and Tom has a very large penis and likes to show it off to his neighbors at pool parties.

The stupidity really is astounding. And I can tell you it all stems from corporations.
