My school'd library has a four day rule, but no one enforces it, all you have to do is have the book back by the end of the quarter or they wont give you your report card.

Thats the height of tight-arsed-ness.... Our school librabr laons books out based on popularity and age (because usually the 2 factors are linked i.e. New books are generally more sought after than older books which people have already had time to read)...
Like an average book is 1 or 2 week loan. A new book is a 1 or 2 day loan.
A popular book is usually 1 day... and an old crap book that noone reads anymore could be 10 weeks for all I know...as I said... nobody reads them...
Textbooks are usually as long as you want but you have to hand over your id card until you give to book back.
The real question is a good book? Usually 2 or 1 weeks..... but then again all the books I like are fantasy/adventure series written by old people... like Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series..... If you're ever gonna read a book... read that series.....

Seven days, then renew it.
If you go one day over, you owe for the book,w hich sucked bad though.
