Same reason people live in California when they KNOW the earthquakes will fuck them over, why they live in Southeast Asis when they KNOW the monsoons and tsunamis will fuck them over, why they live in Siberia when they KNOW them snowstorms are a bitch, why they live on Earth when they KNOW that global warming's gonna fuck them over if Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal don't get 'em first . . . etc.

uh......

(Thinking to self: "How can I break it to him???"

I think I should tell you this: I live in California. The San Andreas Fault is close by. But I seriously hope to god you aren't basing your assumption off of the NBC special "10.5", when all hell breaks loose in california. I sleep through earthquakes and everyone just says "Oh my gosh! There was an earthquake last night!" And I reply "OH NOES! MY STUFF MIGHT HAVE SHIFTED ONE INCH OVERNIGHT!!!"

We have special setups on the bases of tall buildings to prevent a collapse. However, we are not screwed royally by hurricanes on a periodic basis.

Shit! . . . "10.5" wasn't fact? Brian Dennehy gave such a convincing performance, though!

Yeah, yeah, I do know earthquakes (the frequent small ones) are usually no big deal to those in the area. I forgot my [/sarcasm] switch in my previous post. Wildfires and mudslides are still a sort of big issue, though, right? Probably not for the LA metro area but for large areas of the state, yes? Forgive me, I base my assumptions on the "Wildfire '03" ABC special . . . :D

There are areas on this planet where you have the potential for destructive natural disasters, but not on a really regular basis (obviously building a house in the South isn't like building a house on the side of a volcano). It's kind of a chance you take. And really, historically there have been few instances of this kind of destruction by a hurricane in the Gulf area. Galveston at the turn of the century, Andrew, the battering of Florida last year sure, but not enough and not to the extent where people would consider it a constant threat.

On an interesting side note: the company that hosts websites like Something Awful is in the middle of New Orleans.
They're keeping a blog to infrom those of us hundreds of miles away about what it's like.

I'm back.

Postby Exiled » Wed Sep 07, 2005 11:30 am

Well let's get this over with shall we? :)

Well I got up and ate a normal breakfast then I turn on the TV and there it is, Cat 5. So basically some of you were right I did sit around and do... well pretty much nothing except eat cereal (apple jacks) until everyone in my house decided to head out a leave for a local town called Lafayette. (The home of my future college <.< ) And pretty much we didn't expect anything to be here when I got to back so I packed some cloths and grabbed my guitar. Said farewell to the house and got in my car and drove off to a damn nice city. With the help of a fake ID I partyed very much. My senior friends from last year ended up meeting up with me and I crashed at their house while we drank, smoked, and played much music...
Well I came back and luckly my house was still here but our roof and some walls are fucked up. But hell, this isn't my house and all my stuff is still here so I feel bad for the people in New Orleans (esp. my friend who lost $6000 of guitar equipment and 5 pounds of weed) and I volunteered and did my time helping out when the electricity was out. And now I have no school for about another week and I'm probably heading back up to Lafayette tonight for another badass night.

Thanks for your concerns, and I'm sure in another life I probably would of /or already have stayed and looked at my computer through the whole thing.

Peace niggas

Haha. Awesome. Welcome back. You have an awesome way for dealing with adversity.

There was a cool conversation in my AP English class:

Kid: Yeah, it sucks n' all, but they DID build their city in a hole.
Teacher: Well... Keep in mind, they were all drunk.

Fish 2: Whoah there Socrates!

Fish 2: OH FUCK! LETS JUMP ON THAT DEBRIS MAAAAAN!
*Resurfaces*

yup.

Actually, I was laughing my ass off when the reporter said "The water is unbelievably toxic! And this just in Janet! I've recieved reports of fish JUMPING out of the water. I have no idea why they're doing it, but they are jumping out and landing on the debris!"

Gee, wonder why.
