I read The Stranger by Albert Camus in my senior year. It's an amazing novel. One of the only good books I was ever required to read.

Death of Salesman is quite good, too.
I'll say I found her floating face down and I won't let them hurt you, I swear, from the crystal to the crucifix, I will always be with you. So if I go to hell for this I guess I'll meet you there.

Let me think of the books I had to read in highschool...

Freshman - A Wizard of Earthsea (terrible)

Sophomore - To Kill A Mockingbird (I thought it was good, peers disliked it)

Junior - Lord of the Flies (so-so., not great, not terrible, not my favorite book)

Senior - The Wars (meh, not great, we only had to read it because it was written by a famous Canadian author, and the cirriculum requires a certain % canadian content  )

Everyone in the world tells me that Catcher in the Rye is a great book, but I still have yet to read it. Why can't they make kids read good books in school, instead of some of the crap they choose? Ridiculous!

Oh, well J.D. Salinger himself is a hermit of sorts. Lives out on his own somewhere in some mountains... He wrote the book about this guy named "Holden" I think, that quits a private school because they're all a bunch of "Phonies" and goes off to New York City to screw a hooker (chickens out), get the shit beaten outta him, get drunk several times, and call up old people he knew. Yup. 3 Days in NYC...All to realize that he needs to grow up. I'd go in-depth on the title, but I just woke up and need to shower and shit..Then learn some Vectors. I'm thinking about making this a "Teen's say on _____ weekly" kinda thing, where I randomly choose a topic (this week's being core literature).

From simply looking at the name "Herman Melville", one can make a variety of assumptions, which I leave to your speculation. Melville's main trait as a writer is his random digressions and tangents, often remotely related to the story at hand. There are many chapters dedicated to these digressions. Some examples are a chapter on how hardcore, honorable wooden fleet ships were dying out during that time, and how the wooden boat the story takes place on is the final, therefore most hardcore, wooden ship in the navy. Another describes the "innocence and beauty" of Billy Budd, where he is described as Hercules or Apollo. Another disturbing example is an entire chapter dedicated to stating that the antagonist perhaps has feelings of envy towards Billy because he is not as "clean and innocent, almost feminine" as Billy is. As in the antagonist, who is later killed with a single punch to the face (), is homosexual. THEN he talks about the works of an author of that time that also focused too much on homosexuality.

Also, Melville's works are riddled with double negatives and inverted sentence structuring (Think Yoda-speak) which only make the task of finishing the story seem unreachable

Final Summary: It's more interesting to watch the destruction of Namek in DBZ than read this 'short' story.

Anyone have any other books to avoid?

PS: All Barbera Kingsolver works are on this list. It just goes without saying.

Okay guys.. this is gonna seem crazy but her goes somethign that will hopefully be funny as I will horribly twist teen rocker's original words No read aloud and use your best Yoda voice, enjoy...

I had to read Mary Shelly's Frankenstein in my class. It's the worst of the old monster novels.

No one's mentioned Thoreau? I'm of the opinion that his Walden was the most retarded book ever written. He manages to say absolutely nothing of any value, and he takes three pages to state things that could be managed in a sentence or two.
