I agree with the obvious statement that The Way is just a name for what they believe in.
In truth it takes place on a regular planet with regular people who are decieved by higher powers into believing in 'The Way'.
The solution is simple:
In general people travel in a bunch, I don't mean family groups, I mean everybody on the way travels and therefore generally stays in an extremely large, streched-out group. They are the normal people, the people who either believe in the Way and the Purpose or just go along because everybody else does.
Exeptions are Forerunners and people who make settlements.
We all know that because of human reasons the settlements never survive. Where people settle governments grow, along with corruption, causeing Rape, murder and other crimes that drive people away and eventually cause collapse of the settlments. Which is why nobody (who survives for long) is left behind.
The forerunners have a difficult job and most of them remain hidden for their entire lives or (more than likely) die off, which is why nobody gets ahead.
Because of this they never realise that they are continually circling the planet. Nobody who stays back stays alive long enough for the wanderers to circle the planet and get back there, and nobody gets far enough in front to circle the planet and end up at the back.
But why do the people not realise their folly you ask? Why do they not see the remains of previous settlments and realise?
Because the front people make their short settlments (campsites, shanty towns etc.) and as they move on which the do eventually, the people behind them move in and it changes slightly. Then they leave and the next catch up and so on. By the time the last wanderers get to that place where the first wanderers camped, it looks completely different (as a result of the continual use by different people and giving space for natural disasters etc.). Which mean that when they circle the planet (this adds possible years of decay etc.), the front wanderers won't recognise their previous camp, and the cycle goes on.
Oh and the front wanderers pass any remains of previous campsites, and bridges etc. as the Forerunners work.
But Why you ask? Why has nodoby dedicated their time to figure this out?
I think that those 'higher powers' do know, but for the good of the people they spread the lies about 'The purpose' and 'The Way' and the rolling mists etc. So that pople will not question what is happening.
How is it for a greater good? The higher powers do it because they have realise that corruption accumilates when people do and they believe that 'The Way' is the best way to avoid this.
Of course they're probably wrong, and Rhue will come along (teamed up with Traziun of course) and find a better way.
I know I missed stuff but this was all random thinking and bullshit, so feel free to burn this theory to shit. I know most of you didn't bother reading it anyway, I know I wouldn't.
