friendship can be a kind of love, depending on how good friends you are.

okay, I'll weigh in a few thoguhts.

first off.. I believe the wordlove needs to be redesigned in our language.. aka it needafew more words, or just better usage of some we already have... example"lust" describes about 80% of our use of the word love.

Thre greeks had these words for love. you'll note they sound kind of like a previous post.

"eros"--- lust, infatuation, desire. This is a very selfish love. It's wanting or desiring something or someone for the benefit / pleasure it gives you. aka "I love video games, The Way, and chocolate." It also apply when you desire someone for the purpose of sexual relations.

"phileo"--- like, wish well toward, frienship. This is like two soldier who have been together long years. They watch each other's back and hope the best for reach other, but when ther term of service is over they'll probably only see each other once every few years. think of it like having a friend whose company you not only enjjoy, but you would go out of your way to hlep the person even if there was no benfit to you. (I.e. hleping a freind to move knowing you'll never see them again).

"agape"---unconditional commitment to the well being of an idea, person, or thing. caring, dedication. This is where you not only wish the best , bu teven act even if it means letting go. the other person's best intrests are hled in mind and supuercede your own intrests or desires. Once again this not just thought, it is acted upon. This is the kind of thing that makes a marriage work. This is when a husband say to his wife that he loves her, does the dishes, takes out the trash, changes a diaper, then watches the kids for the whole day so she can have moments peace, while knowing that he's missing the poker night with his buddies and time for his favorite hobby, and that his wife just started her peroid so sex ain't gonna happen. It can alos be thought of as a mother's love, and occasionally a sientists dedication.

Eros and phileo both can be felt, but agape is pure choice of will. it's not felt. of course, eros often leads to phileo which in turn often leads to agape. of course, teh process gets hung up a bit early just as often.

hope that helps..

Hmmm, a bit late to this game, but I guess I can reply to this since I have a fairly strong opinion on love, that and I have a significant other in my life right now :P

Anyhoo, in my opinion, love is a very complicated thing. Sure there are feelings of lust and whatnot woven in with a smegload of other feelings, but what it boils down to, is basically, acceptance. Sure, looks are nice, and lust is probably a given if there is mutual affection present. But I believe that true love is where you accept the person as a whole, and are willing to welcome them into your life, despite their flaws. Flaws are just as much a part of a person as are their better traits. I believe it was Gestahlt who said that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's my belief that the same thing applies for love. I also believe that the line between love and hate is exceedingly fine.

What if two people hate all the same people, but one of them hates the other as well?

(I mean, otherwise Strayed and I are IN LOVE! *induces vomiting*)

Well talk about post count +1.

Anyway Fuck buddies is wicked.
I think love is a word that most people don't understand. It's like a mixture of liking sombody, and hating them, and almost every feeling you have.

I HATE LITTLE FUCKS who go arround and ae like "OH I LOVE YOU"
There like 12 years old, and there voices are still like a fucking high pitch.
Hit puberty, then love.

wat are u talking about, little kids are soooo cute when they do that. They're like 4 feet high and walk around holding each others hands, all innocent and pure. If the rest of the human race were like that the world would be perfect. Except for the fact that everyone would be calling each other gay, and like poopyhead and like nobody would know...anything and everyone would just be rly annoying.

In my experience, its possible to become completely devoted to someone to the point of fanaticism. I consider fanatacism to be a bit like love, and if the person is of your preferrable gender might as well just call it that. Though whenever I get involved in a relationship I almost invariably regret coming into the open with my feelings, because I find out just how terrible the other person really is.

Besides, love makes people do some pretty horrible things.

Love is like a hobby. Its a nice diversion but if someone spends all their time talking about it, it just makes you wanna punch em in the face. 8)
