yay! jonesy translated it absolutely correct
It's hard to believe for me that over a decade ago there was a time when German songs were popular in the USA. Even we German guys think that our language is not proper for singing pop songs because it sounds harsh (unlike French) and offers not as many rhymes as other languages. That's why 95 percent of the songs played by our radio stations are in English. The rest are French, Italian (Eros Ramazotti) and, well, German songs.
The majority likes it that way so there is no regulation as in France, where the radio stations are bound by law to play a certain amount of French songs (known by hearsay and vacations spent in Provence in Southern France).

Presently we've got a German hiphop wave and a group of hiphoppers called "Aggro Berlin" aroused puplic interest because their songs contain misogynistic and xenophobic (I had to look up those 2 terms) lyrics. It's a shame that we never get rid of these things.

I prefer Bobby McFerrin's song  One year ago he gave a concert in my hometown which lies nearby Munich in Southern Germany. Usually I listen to Britpop, this so-called "Raw Pop" thingy and stuff like that, like Oasis, The Strokes, Mando Diao, Franz Ferdinand.

Re: German songs in the US - There are quite a few people who adore Rammstein. So the German Invasion is still alive . . . sorta.

I don't think Jonesy translated it himself...

One thing I thought worked in the translation was that the order of a couple of verses was reversed and actually sounds better that way.

But besides that, the song has the same exact meaning, only it's much more subtle and much more difficult to actually understand what the song is about.
