Murt, you make an excellent point. But don't bullshit about radiation, even the yanks didn't see that, maybe they would have gone for conventionals.
Everyone was fed up of the war by then, i'm not defending the actions, but they're understandable. For me, my grandfather was just about to go out to Japan and get his boat kamakazied when the bombs ended the war. If you take the argument that preserving your own is worth the lives of others (I'm not nescersarily) then the bombs were fine.
But then so would pearl harbour be. Not everyone in the world has the same ethical system, and that doesn't make them wrong. They were just preserving their own.
Finally, hitler would have never even gained power, if it weren't for France's vindictive streak at versailles, and their disgraceful war guilt clause. More importantly he wouldn't have gained power if america hadn't fucked up its economy leading to the depression. Come on, how dumb can you be to expect material wealth to spring up from the stockmarket, if no one is bothering to actually make something to pay for all the loans. Crap.
But lets face it religion does often start wars. However this is not always the case as it wasn't religion that forced the Americans to drop two atomic bombs on Japan. And no, the Nazis didn't start WW2 because of religion... in fact the just wanted scapegoats and so they used German people's rascism which was already there. They hated the Jewish race rather than the religion. So that's one BIG war not started by religion i guess.
