Yes I know rock originates from blues, it's almost common knowledge methinks.

It's never a bad thing to be good at your instrument of choice, but you need to allow yourself the freedom to make minor mistakes.
It's like cooking, most recepies are made when someone mistakes spoons for cups, or egg-yolks with egg-whites.

I've lost my train of thought since my last post.

I take no issue with repeating awesome. I don't care what anyone says, but the sound of a single electric guitar is actually pretty annoying (and the cheese background instruments in those videos don't count for anything). I also take issue with people releasing "solo" albums when they're only 1 of 5 people playing.

Though I will admit...
Yngwie released Unleash the Fury in 2005. As stated in an issue of "Guitar World" magazine, he titled this album after the infamous 'airline incident', which occurred in a flight to Japan for the 'Odyssey' tour. He was drunk and behaving obnoxiously, until he fell asleep and was roused by a woman pouring a jug of iced water on him. Enraged, he shouted, "You've unleashed the fucking fury!"

...is pretty much the most badass thing I've read about in a long time.

I think if Yngwie Malmsteen got together with Herman Li and Sam Totman it would destroy everyone's mind and would ultimately obliterate all matter in the known universe.

He's right, it should be common knowledge. For those who don't know, however, an explanation is in order.

Here's a chord progression Image

What you do is get together and "jam" with some buddies who can play the song too. While they play some simplistic medley and keep time, you, a soloist, basically make shit up on the spot, aka Improvising. Usually there's a chorus that is played a few times first. You play notes that are in that key during whatever part of the progression you're playing at the moment. A common practice is to sort of relate whatever the original chorus rhythmically and/or harmonically to varying degrees. Some rock solo's kind of use this mimicking style as a mere intro to their solo, but I digress.

What I'm getting at is rock applies this same principle of "oh hey, I'm going to bust out a solo in-key to the chord progression." Some bands stick to a consistent improv solo after they make a record, but nothing is forcing them to keep that exact solo.

Anywho, fun tangent, but I believe a good example of rock doing "that blues thing" is evident in AC/DC's "Rock n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution", but a more blatant example is that crossroads scene, where the boy applies whatever hippie crap the old guy taught him about blues and then rocks it out. Before and after the duel, the band plays some rock bass lines too, by the way. Blah blah, if you don't get this, shut the fuck up and die. Fuck I am tired.

I love the crossroads guitar duel.

Unfortunately, the lead guitarists/singer of my band has run away and formed his own band and the new drummer and bassist who were his friends have run off as well so now I'm stuck with the people from my old band, who all suck reaaaallllyy baaaddd and now there is only 1 other guitarist and he can only play chords and is also quite bad. No lightning fast power metal anymore.

But there is still a chance I may get into Platform One (Music College). Even though they initially denied me they said if I did well enough in my guitar lessons they'd let and judging by my guitar tutors comments last week it's looking hopeful. If I do get I shall form my own band and see if we can get into the IOW festival, which would be great, becuase the IOW festival is now full of crappy and/or mediocre pop/rock artists who are either rubbish or boring and is now attracting people who like pop and loadsa people are like "The IOW festival is a pop festival now".

If I ever get to perform there then I know exactly what I am going to say to introduce my band "We are here to the make the IOW festival METAL" and then open with the fastest most aggressive sounding metal song we've written and probably have some Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, DragonForce and some DethKlok covers. Hell yeah, that'll show those pop-loving pansies. I'd need a better guitar though becuase my Vintage Les Paul is falling apart and only has 22 frets. I could probably do with buying thinner strings from now on, becuase, even though I have invested in a thicker guitar pick, it still sometimes gets caught and I still have to put in a bit of effort to play fast.

So does anyone have any of the new 2007 albums yet?

My p2p stuff doesn't work and we should do an exchange sometime.

I think Opeth are releasing an album this year. If so then I am soooo getting it. Chineese Democracy may actually be released this year but even it does, I'm not sure if I can be arsed to buy it. Velvet Revolver are releasing their second album Libertad on the 3rd of July which I am definitely going to get. DevilDriver are releasing the album The Last Kind Words on the 31st of July which I may also buy. Apart from that... nah.

On an unrelated note ... why is Matchbox Twenty your avatar?

And, just curious, have you heard either of them?
