True, more babies do build the economy, but more babies thrown in trash cans left for dead, do not. I think abortion is ok, simply because it is a woman's right. Why should religious fanatics have a say in what OTHER PEOPLE DO WITH THEIR LIVES?
Actually, there is awaiting list a mile, size 8 font, long to adopt babies (I know because I've looked into it rather seriously) The problem is teh government makes adoption an incredibly expensive process. (around 20k) It would be much eaier to o tighten controls on abotion if these restrictive adoption policies were ended.
Secondly you asked what right do we have to say what others shoudl do with their lives? Very simple we believe we are our brotehrs keepers. (one of the first stories in the bible shows the drastic and horrible consequences should one fail to do this) Therefore we try to save people from injuring themselves and others.
"Sin" can easily be described as the same choice a child has about whether to put their finger in the electrical socket, or running out in the street. Just becasue they can do it doesn't mean they should. A loving parent will actually spank their child to prevent the child doing such a thing. This parent is using a lesser injury (insulting the childs pride) to prevent a greater injury (potential death / loss of limb). The parent does not punish or prevent their child because they hate them or are mean spirited (the child might think this) but out of love.
Thus the reason "religious folk" mess with the law making process is out of love.
