The central storyline of Final Fantasy VII really is excellent. However, I think the main story gets dragged down by the large number of essentially irrelevant sidestories that just seem to pop up incidentally. As part of the game, you are forced to explore the histories of Barrett, Nanaki, and Yuffie (well, not
forced in Yuffie's case); of these, only Barrett's background has any relevance to the main story, but even that is quite minimal. I would have much preferred to see more of Victor and Reeve, who's backgrounds were important to the main plotline, but were never substantially developed. And it's not just character-based quests; there are simply too many secondary side-ventures that come up in the course of the main plot.
Of course, some people like this. They denigrate Final Fantasy X in comparison, because the story is too direct, and every event is topical to the main thrust. While I too would have liked to see Final Fantasy X be longer, I am glad they didn't add extra irrelevancies that would disturb the "This is
my story," character of the game.
