This is the single worst idea I have ever heard. Well, not really. But it's between the third and fifth worst ideas ever. Torrents work if you have three different servers seeding, but even with people who have cable the speeds get progressively worse the more people connect. As a last resort, yes. But no one in their right mind would ever go for a torrent download when you have a download straight off the server available. And no ones going to leave the torrent on as they play the game. Even with the best of computers those things devour RAM.

If the main server goes down theres always a mirror. Torrents just don't work when you can get the file all in one go off of a web server.

yeah, except that wouldn't be the case. the torrent release would be first, to alleviate the pressure of that first push of downloaders.

Then you have the people who are watching the site for the file get there first, download the file and get off the torrent so they can extract it, and then be more enthusiastic about playing the game than sharing.

Doesn't Lun still have space at whahay? Get the server here to redirect to a list of mirrors there. I'm sure one of our fine gents here would be so kind as to host another list as well. Ryan has hosting space too doesn't he?

If everyone had T3 connections, torrents could work. But we don't and it flagrantly doesn't.

Verb's right... with the server down, it doesn't matter how many mirrors we have: no one could get to them; and sadly, no one could access the MB to see just how right I was..... heh.

Bill, the more "seeders" (people who have the file and are just sharing it) and "leechers" (people who are trying to get the file), sometimes the better the performance since everyone who downloads has to upload the file simultaneously. BitTorrents work the best when there's a lot of folks seeding and leeching. I don't know what torrents you're used to hosting, but these files are nothing compared to any movie file.... (I've been seeding E1-4 right now for 3 days, and it uses 39 MB of RAM). I don't know where you got your "3 servers seeding the file" info..... it's just plain wrong, but whilst I was reading your post in utter confusion, I couldn't help but feel joyful due to the glory of your avatar icon.

An early bittorrent release just makes sense (earlier than the direct download). It'll take the tremendous load of distribution to the people who want the file. I'm not sayin it'll happen.... just that if it did, it would work and solve any bandwidth dilema.
