I'm pretty sure 'shouted' and 'yelled' carry a somewhat different connotation than 'said'. Probably "loudness", so it's not a direct synonym. That, and 'replied' and 'responded' imply that the speaker is, well, responding to someone else, which is a little more descriptive of an action than 'said'. I could use said, but I find a variety descriptive words to be oddly funny, and a little out of the loop. Your critiques sound more like opinions to me.

Impossible wrote:No published author will ever use words like "responded", "replied", "noted" and "hollered" every second paragraph.

Impossible wrote:...but it's just as bad if not worse to go out of your way to have a whole bunch of unique equivalents

Those are not compelling arguments.

Why don't you stop critiquing the works of others you pompous prick. Let us see you do better Impossible. Frankly, your fan work is not "publisher" material as you decided to put it. It's decent, that much I'll give you, however do not make it seem as if you are some literature phenom.

On top of that, these are all original works. Impossible took an already made game with already made dialogue and just added some details.

Who the hell cares, nobody reads books because of the fantabulous (Though Jera's comes close to) grammer and use of vocabulary, they read them for the kick ass story.

Geez, Takarious is nearly as good as Excell at acting like someone said something they didn't (and also at being a fucking hypocrite). I didn't say anything remotely along those lines. I'm saying that while my writing isn't yet good enough to be published, Jeramyu's is a lot further, because one of the better ways to improve your writing is to read things written by other people who were good enough to get their work published - which none of you obviously do.

I would respond or reply to what Jeramyu said with a shouting or yelling argument, but it's obvious he only read fragments of my post (which was a lot to read for someone who never reads books) and still has no idea what I'm actually arguing, so there's no point.

Edit: I'm not saying my writing is the best example, but it may help the less literate see what I mean:

“...And that’s why I’ve been asking around camp about her.” He finished confidently.
“Oh Rhue, I really hope you find her! In fact, I know you will!” The girl across the campfire from him responded optimistically.
“Hope...” the man called Rhue muttered. “Something I possess little of.”

Gah, here we have a lot of alternatives to said, but not just that - how something is said says volumes more than the best synonym (noted?) the author can think of. Words like "confidently" and "optimistically". It may be a little too much there, I'll have to look at that later.

“Don’t say that, Rhue,” she said firmly, “Trust the Purpose! I’m sure that you and her are destined to meet again.”
“The Purpose... Even it has betrayed me...” Rhue said bitterly.
“Betrayal?” said a nearby man, who had also gathered around the fire. “I think not. Something that doesn’t exist isn’t capable of betrayal.”
“No, you’re wrong! It does exist!” the girl insisted. “Sometimes I can even feel its call.”

Ooh, scary, "said". Does that mean I'm a horrible author? No. Pick up a fucking book some time. There are lots of other reasons why I'm a horrible author.

“You’re just young. When you get older, you will eventually see the folly of such naïve beliefs.”
“I don’t believe that for even a second!”
After a brief pause, the man named Rhue decided there was nothing left for him there, and began walking away.
“Rhue, where are you going? You need to rest!”

Now, can you work out what's going on here? No? Never read a book? Oh well.

And a bit afterwards:

“Those murdering bandits are somewhere nearby?”
“Yes, don’t get taken by surprise. May the Purpose guide you.”
And he walked off down the riverside, towards another lonely sunrise.
Another woman who had been sitting there silently spoke. “That boy scares me...” she said worriedly.
“He’s not dangerous...” answered the girl. “Just... confused.”
“Oh, well, it doesn’t really matter,” the man said, “I doubt any of us will be seeing the likes of him again. He’s setting quite a pace for himself.”
“Maybe he'll become a Forerunner,” the girl said hopefully.

See what's here? First no description, then said and an adjective, then a synonym, then just said, and then said and an adjective. This works much better than "shouted yelled shouted yelled shouted yelled", or "responded replied noted said observed". Because as I already said, if an author is trying to come up with words to use in place of "said", it gets annoying, and it's VERY OBVIOUS.

I'd rather choose "responded replied noted said observed" than "said said said said said said.

Wow, you don't understand a damn thing do you? I'm telling you to shut the fuck up because you have no place to talk. Did I say you were a self proclaimed published writer? No, I don't see that anywhere jackass, so stop putting words in my fucking mouth. Furthermore, the word publisher was used in the context of your comments on Jera. I called you a pompous prick simply because you bash your betters in order to make you appeal to others. So how am I being a hypocrite? When did I contradict myself? Did I once say you COULD be a published writer? Fuck no I didn't so I don't see where you're getting this from. Frankly, I don't think you even know what that word means, because I swear I see you call people hypocrites on a daily basis. And half the time it has absolutely no relevance to what they say. Perhaps I'll just keep things simple and to the point, so that your egotistical shallow mind can comprehend the words without dubbing me as a "hypocrite", as you so obtusely put it. In the end, what I was trying to say was:

You being a good writer is simply Impossible. Ironic, eh?

So please just do us all the service and keep your damn inferior complex to yourself you petulant faggot.

I love how I've done nothing to the fool in months and he comes at me for no reason.

All I have to say on this is the following:

"I used to try and write like that until I read the Chronicles of Prydain (which I actually learnt of from an RM2K game based on the first book, and now it's one of my favourite series'),"

Wow Impossible. Great source of literature. It's like learning science from Bill Nye the Science Guy. Sure, he's fun and all. But he isn't much of a teacher. Moron.

Personally, I don't have time to read every single word in books. I read excessively when I was in my early grades, so my reading style differs from many. When I read something for an assignment and read faster than I would normally, I unconciously skip over the tags as well as some longer paragraphs, which are almost always long descriptions. When I read a book on my own time, the discriptions are some of the best parts of a book, but there isn't much point in reading the tags.

Ok, you've done it now, asshole. You can start shit with Excell, War, Taka, or whoever the hell you want, but I can GURANTEE you're not going to get past starting shit with me.

Your "argument" is so faulty and miscontrued, it's really not even worth responding to. But since I want to show you a few things, teach you a few lessons, I'll go ahead anyway.

First off, here's something blatant. You can't debate the words at all, and it's so fucking wrong it's not even funny.

Impossible wrote:(which was a lot to read for someone who never reads books)

Congradulations, you win the official "most baseless accusation of the year" award. Now tell me, and tell me straight. Where the hell do you get off saying I never read books? How can you even begin to prove that statement. Have you been observing every minute of my waking life? No, no you have not. You're just spouting shit out of nowhere. Maybe you read more books than me; I'm not going to make any charges like that, but rest assured, I read quite a lot, and I write a hell of a lot more. Maybe not more than you: I don't know. I'm not making any assumptions or accusations.

Ok, you're also saying that I didn't read every part of your post. So let's do that now.

One problem with it is that practically every time someone talks you use a different and often inappropriate synonym for "said", and it looks horrible.

I mean, you don't want to be redundant, but that's just as bad.

You need to get into the practice of putting "in my opinion" after all of your posts. You treat most of them like facts.

Jesus, read a book some time. No published author will ever use words like "responded", "replied", "noted" and "hollered" every second paragraph. No, nobody wants to use "said" every time, but it's just as bad if not worse to go out of your way to have a whole bunch of unique equivalents (or just two that keep repeating, in some cases).

I don't give a fuck about published authors. There's nothing that makes them necessarily better than unpublished authors, and I could care less about any "rules" they might have made. I write things the way I want to express them. Stupidly? Fine, but that's your opinion, and I suggest you connotate it as so. Nobody's going to force me into writing a certain way.

I'm under the impression that you just read books, and write in the exact same fashion as every other dull (In my opinion) fantasy author out there. You're not going to produce anything unique. Maybe my stuff looks like it sucks, but I write easier knowing my style is something that's been touched upon less throughout history. It's ok to take inspiration from others, but we shouldn't use their writings as patters to be followed.

I used to try and write like that until I read the Chronicles of Prydain (which I actually learnt of from an RM2K game based on the first book, and now it's one of my favourite series'), and actually took a look at how the author did the same thing - the big tip-off was that it didn't look retarded.

Once again, in your opinion. I don't know if you expect us to take it that way, but almost every single post you make is in a directly offensive, confrontational, assholish way.

Wow, Teen, I thought you could read, but obviously not. I know using said too often is bad, although I had to teach myself since I skipped Grade 2. But that's as in 5 lines in a row with just "said". The exact opposite is just as bad. If an author has to go out of their way to have 10 retarded synonyms for "said" in one sentence, it's disgustingly obvious to the reader. I'm not going to go any further than that, I already made the facts clear in my previous post, so read it again. Extremes are never good.

It IS bad? Is that a fact? No. This once again supports my belief that you treat writing as some infinitly identical proceedure, where books are written by specific formulas. To me at least, writing is freedom, through a means that can easily be shared with other people. And I'd appreciate if you'd respect that. I'm not trying to make my book follow any rules.

Are you saying that because Fascism is a bad idea, Communism must be a good one, too? OMG COMMUNIST!

I really think you shouldn't try and fit these things into analogies.

Making my writing more like published writing isn't going to make it any better. I'm not writing with the intention of getting better. It might happen, but I don't have any goals to make my writing better. All I wanted to do was write a story about a bunch of crazy guys who go on all sorts of insane adventures, and kick a lot of ass in the process. For the sake of the unity within our core members. After people finish reading it, I hope people will think "damn, we kick a lot of ass", and if you honestly need the grammar correct in order to get passion out of my writing, then it really isn't worth my time to cater it to just. I'm not being paid to write this. If you sincerely believe there's something I could do to improve the experience to the entire audience, then I'm all ears.

See, the problem that I had with what you said, is this: You had a complaint against me using synonyms for speach adjectives, and thought it was bad. Your 'reasoning' is that you thought it was retarded. The worst part is that your support was "because that's not what published authors do". That blows my mind that you can not only act like your opinion is fact, but that you can support it by something even more unreasonable.

If you were to have said, "I think this is bad because it might confuse people", or some reasoning that could benefit people's interperetation of my stuff, then I could value that critique, and make adjustments accordingly. But the prudence and arrogence with which you lodge your 'complaints' is in such an offensive, ignorant, and unsupported manner, that I can't even begin to consider that.

I'm not going to hold a grudge or anything. As far as I'm concerned, this argument doesn't exist outside this topic. But maybe you should learn to be something called considerate towards others, instead of making baseless accusations, and propigating your opinions as facts. Now don't take this any further, and just let the story go on.
