SpaceBoy2000 wrote:I have made a LAN/Internet game using a very dumb and obscure programming language. I made it for my ISP, and I had half the school playing it on their free time. Incidentally, lots of teachers who teach in the computer labs are really pissed at me. Oh well, it got me a really high mark (over 100%) so I can't complain.
Yes, I can make it go over a LAN very easily. Making it go over the internet is complicated by firewalls, but some of my friends has got it going fine. Now here's the thing: The way I programmed the LAn game was having one server, which processes all the data, and a client, which basically sends what the client computer puts. Its uses one port per player, so really multiple player systems off a central server will be hard to do, but I suspect it will be a two player thing rather than a huge game with a database storing stats (which, BTW, I'm working on right now in Java, which I'm learning while writing this). If you want, I could make a Plunge game, for two people, over the internet, but here are the limitations:
- You need to know the server's IP Address
- One of your ports have to be open and the game will have to be configured to send information through that port. I will probably make it user configurable
- Statwise, it will probably be configured by each player, and then displayed to the other player. However, the other player will have to confirm it before the game starts
- Graphics will be a REAL pain to add. The programming language is really limited in this aspect (which is why i'm switching to Java). Initial program will be text based, and I don't think I'll add a lot in terms of graphics anyways.
- Memory intensive. I will guess (again, it is a GUESS) it will need a Pentium 2. Like I said, horrible programming language (I know Java isn't that great as well, but meh).
- Possibly there maybe chat between the two players, but I probably won't add it, since you can use any messaging program for that.
I will make it if you guys desire it, but if you guys don't want it, I'll wait till I finish learning Java. It really isn;t that tough though, the hardest part will be deciphering how Lun did it (since I want to make it as close as possible).

Wow, I find the LAN progamming very interesting. Can you tell me how you go about programming a LAN game? What requirements and such?
